About

The Journal of West African History's 10th anniversary conference will bring together seminal scholars and students of West African History, to elucidate the region’s role in world affairs, the cultural linkages between West Africa and its Diaspora, as well as the impact of globalization and environmental change on this western portion of the African continent. The conference will also make connections, both ancient connections through the historical forced migration of human beings across the Atlantic, Sahara Desert, and Indian Ocean and newer connections shaped by the increasingly globalized world that we live in. By shining light on West Africa, the JWAH 10th Anniversary Conference will contribute to our understanding of a region whose peoples are at the center of critically important globalized issues such as health, security, and poverty.

Invited scholars will address timely and important issues in West Africa and West African Studies, including environmental challenges in an era of climate change, the impact of conflict and poverty on West African economies and global migration. The invited panelists will address these issues through papers delivered in one of four thematically organized panels:

  1. Archives, Sources, and Methods for West African History;
  2. West Africa & the World: Diaspora, Pan-Africanism, and Global Connections;
  3. Gender in West African History: Past Developments and Future Directions;
  4. Environment in the History of West Africa.

The conference is free and open to the public.

JWAH

The conference marks the 10th anniversary of the Journal of West African History. Like the conference, the journal plans to assess its contributions to the field and move in new directions at the beginning of a new decade. Published semiannually, the Journal of West African History is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed research journal that features the highest quality articles on West African history. It is located at the cutting edge of new scholarship on the social, cultural, economic, and political history of West Africa, and fills a representational gap by providing a forum for serious scholarship and debate on women and gender, sexuality, slavery, oral history, popular and public culture, and religion. JWAH is committed to rigorous thinking and analysis; is international in scope; and offers a critical intervention about knowledge production. Scholarly reviews of current books in the field appear in every issue; and the publication is in both English and French.

For infromation about how to contribute to JWAH, see the JWAH website or contact the journal.
